IPv4 is a robust and scalable protocol, but it is not immune to the retrospective poor design and planning considerations when viewed from a current socio-economic environment demand perspective. The design of IPv4 is over 25 years old with little or no changes to the protocol and its communications method has little or no foresight as to the potential growth of the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adastanetwork.asia\/courses.html#ipv6\">IPv6\u00a0<\/a>is introduced mainly to solve the address space issues. With its large amount of addresses and with other features, IPv6 is estimated to replace IPv4 in a very near future. \u00a0 Some of the IP experts said that the bottom line for IPv6 deployment is going to be the worldwide demand for Internet Addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) uses 32 bits of address. Currently the most widely implemented version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/learning\/network-layer\/internet-protocol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internet protocol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the next-generation communications protocol designed to succeed the Internet Protocol version 4 exhaustion. IPv6 addresses are normally written as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, where each group is separated by a colon ( : ).<\/p>\n<p>Addresses are n:n:n:n:n:n:n:n, n = 4 digit hexadecimal integer, 16 x 8 = 128-bit address.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs nav-justified\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-02c5d998d6a38e0ccee\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-whatarethefeaturesofipv6?\" href=\"#tab-02c5d998d6a38e0ccee\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">What are the Features of IPv6?<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-whatarethefeaturesofipv6?\" id=\"tab-02c5d998d6a38e0ccee\">\n<p>There are several features and benefits IPv6 may able\u00a0to provide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Larger address space<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; IPv6 increases the IP address size from 32 bits to 128\u00a0bits, thereby increasing the number of globally routable IP addresses from\u00a0approximately 4,300,000,000 (4.3\u00d7109\u00a0) to\u00a0\u00a0340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 (3.4\u00d71038).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Theoretically,\u00a0<em><strong>IPv6 could provide an IPv6 \/48<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0address prefix block\u00a0(1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 IP addresses) for every 10 square meters on\u00a0earth. Increasing the address space to 128 bits provides the following additional\u00a0potential benefits:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Enhanced applications functionality<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Enables peer-to-peer,\u00a0infrastructure-less applications and networking (vs. client-server model).<\/li>\n<li><em>End-to-end transparency<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Reduces motivations for address translation\u00a0technologies.<\/li>\n<li><em>H<\/em><em>ierarchical addressing<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Summarizes and manages routing table\u00a0growth.<\/li>\n<li><em>Auto-configuration<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 The unicast IPv6 addressing architecture uses one\u00a0half of the address (64 bits) to embed IEEE extended unique identifiers\u00a0(EUI-64) in each interface address. The use of globally unique EUI-64s on\u00a0each interface allows systems to derive globally unique IPv6 addresses\u00a0automatically from simple announcements from neighboring\u00a0<em>systems.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Scalability of multicast routing<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 IPv6 provides a much larger pool of\u00a0multicast addresses with multiple scoping options.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Auto-configuration<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Clients using IPv4 addresses use the Dynamic Host\u00a0Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server every time they log onto a network. This\u00a0process is called \u2018stateful auto-configuration.\u2019 IPv6 supports a revised DHCPv6\u00a0\u00a0protocol to support similar stateful auto-configuration, but also supports stateless\u00a0auto-configuration of nodes that do not require a server to obtain addresses, but\u00a0uses router advertisements to create an address. This creates a \u201cplug-and-play\u201d\u00a0environment and can simplify management and administration.
